Rover 216 GTI (new engine)

#1 Post by bhlegit » Tue Dec 26, 2017 4:58 pm

Hey,

New to this forum, I needed some advice from you guys. So basically I just blew a hole in my engine (was in fast lane when it happened, luckily i didn't die!) - its irreparable and so I am looking for a new Honda twin cam dohc engine with low mileage (current is 68k) i think the code is d16a9. If anyone has any ideas about where I could source another engine (breakers with a 216 gti knocking about?) and any company/mechanic who would be able to do the swap. Am willing to pay more than the cars value to get it running again, its a great car and want to keep it on the road.

Looking forward to hearing some suggestions!

Thanks very much.

If you can find a 216 Cabriolet breaking or going cheap, it will probably have the DOHC engine in it.

What happened with your engine?!?

Basically I was going down the motorway and suddenly the oil light came on and the engine sounded really funny and then 5 seconds later it exploded. Not on fire but loads of white smoke, so i guess a sudden loss of oil pressure which then caused the conrod to shoot out of the block and theres a huge hole :( Yes i will look around for cabby on eBay and such, thx for the suggestion. Anyone know if the Rover center in St Albans would be able to fit the new motor if i manage to find one?

Quite possibly yes :)
It would be worth a call to ask them to check it says DOHC on the top - I suspect it might!

how can i be sure that the engine is the honda one and not the k series rover engine? by the year of the car? 89-93 for the honda one? both of them say twin cam dohc and neither say honda or rover on the actual cover, or am i wrong? was just going by pics on google. will the engine code be written in the engine bay anywhere?

ask which side the gearbox is on :laughing2

The failure sounds like your oil pump failed.

If it doesn’t say Honda or Rover on the engine, then it’s a Honda D series.

The Rover K Series engine says “Rover” on it.

As the Cabriolet is a 1995 car it will be a Honda engine. The 1.6 cars changed from the Honda to the Rover engine in 1996.

ok great thanks for the clarification on that. Sad to say that one is sold :( would have been ideal as was only £250. The next cheapest one i can find is £650: https://www.gumtree.com/p/rover/rover-c ... 1280430864

owner of that one says thinks it might be d16a8 engine ( what are the differences if any?) is there another way to tell for sure as we/he cannot locate the code anywhere?
