looks like this could be my option dudes! have spoken to the owner looks like il be able to get just the engine, and at 77k miles its only a bit over my 68k miles. With regards to swapping out the block and damaged rods pistons etc (i am no mechanic) does anyone know someone/somewhere that would be able to rebuild the engine in or around London? Cheers mates, and happy new year!

:DD haha yeah I have messaged him though will see what he says. I think the guy with the old cabby engine was going to let t go for less if not free it seemed. Although this does look like if i got this i could get it sorted sooner rather than later :)

hey guys it seems this one is a d16a8 too. Surely most of it is the same so could i use the block rods etc from the d16a8 to rebuild it? Apart from the cat converter are there any actual differences between the two? What should i do? Cheers lads

Right let's have a little recap because an element of confusion is creeping into the thread.

D16 Blocks
DOHC blocks have a water passage for the oil cooler fitted behind the oil filter, they also have a higher piston crown to achieve a higher C/R.

SOHC doesn't.

DOHC Cylinder Heads
The pre 1992 non cat' engine with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION was fitted with different camshafts [ valve opening closing and probably valve overlap differ]
For some reason only known to Honda, early DOHC engines fitted with automatic transmission have the same camshafts as later catalyst equipped DOHC engines.

This is an aside written into the cylinder head description on page 5 of the dohc section of the [Rover] Honda Engine/Gearbox overhaul manual. There is no mention of this in the Rover general vehicle overhaul manuals.

I can't comment on interchangeability, but it's usually best to change like for like. :slapme

Is your blown up D16A9 AN AUTO? because if so it's completely the same as the catalyst equiped D16A8

If it's a manual you will need to salvage your old head.

That is the best option.

Keep the ECU matched to the correct cylinder head.

This keeps any subsequent fault finding within known parameters, because you have stayed with Honda's build order.
