SD3 owner from Germany

#1 Post by insightowner » Mon Sep 17, 2018 9:12 pm

Hi there.

I am a vivid SD3 owner from Germany. Having owned a white 213S in the early 1990s as a trainee mechanic at the local Honda dealer that car always stuck to my mind.
Stuck to it as a cute and luxorious version of a 3rd gen Honda ciVic. And just as reliable.

Years later and after driving some other ciVics, CRXes, a first gen Honda Insight, a Prius and other cars, I stumbled across a 213S being up for sale in Bavaria in early 2016.
It was a 1988 model in red with 199.000 kms, but a first owner car with the optional leather seats in grey. I bought the car for 1250 Euros without looking underneath as I was happy to find a leather-clad 213. The interior is in pristine condition but the bodywork was bad: the right hand side was completely rusted through from the top of the front wheelarch to the end tip of the sill, below the C-pillar. I have never seen such a long hole before on any car, *laughs*.
But it has been restored since. A lot of sweat, blood and money has been put into the car. As it has the rare leather seats, I even splashed-out into having an air-conditioning fitted and even found an original switch...

So far it is registered in Germany as an historical car and I have put more than 11.000 Euros into the car. I have still to fit the "Vitesse" ducktail, the lowering springs (1st gen CRX ones fit, have the same part-number) and some pretty steelies that fill out the wheel arches decently.

How ironic is that?

That isn't just a Rover quirk I believe that classic/vintage prices are higher across the board.

Please post some photos of before, during and after your restoration. (You'll need to use Flickr or a similar photo-hosting site)

Or even better can we have this story as an article in a future edition of our Viking club magazine please?

Thanks for the prompt replies and welcome.

Concerning the pictures, I would be very happy to post them on here but without an account on such an uploading site and my questionable competence of managing such things once signed-on (either forgotten password or nickname on photobucket-thingy a couple of times), does not make it easy...

I have dozens "before-during-after" pictures of the 213 and would be really happy to share them for your magazine. I would also do a decent write-up, too !

I forgot to mention that I also own a second, SD3, for parts. It is a car from France, a 213SE automatic with 65.000 kms on the clock and literally rust-free...
Well, which other SD3 owner can say that his donor car has done less miles and had less rust than his main car, lool ?!

I wanted to save the leather-seat fitted original. And I spared no costs doing so: I even have had leather fitted to the steering wheel, "Vitesse" style. And you will definitely roll your eyes when I tell you the story and price to make the Honda wheel covers fit...

(I am still looking for the oem facelift Vitesse alloys)

It would probably be a good idea for you to start an email conversation with Jeremy, our magazine editor and membership secretary ( membership@rover200.org.uk ) he can help you out with selecting suitable material for the magazine and also arrange to get a few photos posted on here for the rest of us in the meantime :)

I will get in touch with Jeremy as soon as I am back from work, tonight.

Am I correct with my presumption, that the mentioned eMailadress is Jeremy's ?
