Former 214SEi owner

#1 Post by Griffith_500 » Sun May 17, 2020 6:18 pm

Hey all,

Found the forum whilst reminiscing about my first car, a silver 1995 214 SEi

Bought it in October 98 for £5470 with 30k, like a lot of Rovers it had been one former elderly owner so was immaculate. Distinctly remember it been rather fast for being a 1.4 and know it had a similar BHP to my mates AX GT, although that weighed the same as a crisp packet so the SEi wasn't as fast on the 0-60 dash. Also remember the Chucky sporty steering wheel.

Part exchanged it 18 months later after putting 12k on it for £3000 :o against a 306 D turbo S.

Recently been considering coming back to the Rover fold and trying to find a reasonable condition 214 SEi as a bit of a practical classic.

I'm very biased but they're rather lovely! I adore mine-thread link below if you fancy a look.

The AX GT is another cracking modern classic-a mate had one when I was 17 which felt like an absolute rocket! However, it felt like a rocket with the build quality and integrity of balsa wood-a point proven when he spun and crashed it on a country road. It looked like a Coke can that had been trodden on...fortunately said mate was fine.

Your 214 SEi is like new itcaptainslow, it's good enough to be in a car museum! Saw it posted on pistonheads last year as the as the readers car of the week or something which planted the seed as potential owning another one.

Know what you mean about the AX, remember my mates having very shoddy build quality and it breaking down a few times, he didn't keep it long. Another mate had loved my SEi so he bought a 96 nightfire red one as his first car, even went to the trouble of getting an after market spoiler fitted.

Been having a clear out and found the original marketing of the car, pre internet and social media days when car showrooms had to take photos and get them developed.

Hi Darren, I too love the SEi and have owned 4 examples - British Racing Green, Silver, Nightfire Red and Charcoal. They are probably my favourite R8 Rovers with a lovely spec.

I own the charcoal one presently, 1996 N reg, with 49,000 on the clock. I bought it last year, with it being stood for around 3 years. It’s has done something like 9,000 miles in 14 years!

The car is currently at Rover Revival having some recommissioning work done. It also needs some cosmetic work which I’ll do myself when it gets back.

I wanted to do it as I love the SEi and I’ve seen too many perfectly good Rovers falling into non-enthusiast hands and being scrapped for parts.

So I wanted to do the right thing by it - get it back on the road and MOT’d. I would consider moving it on when it’s sorted. It’s hopefully going to be a nice little summer project and it would be nice for it to go to a good home (proving I don’t fall in love with it myself :D )

It's for nothing! :blink
Unless it was in a very bad condition - which I'm utterly doubtful about :wink - the LHD equivalent will make hardly less than 1k € on the continent, even not too easy or too quick to sell.

Sounds like you got a good deal with your SEI,
In early 1997 my dad bought a 95 R8 214i (8v spi) for £7999 with 9k on the clock.
It became my first car about 9 years later, it lasted until about 110k so money well spent :wink3

Shame that you had to give it away , at least they are going up in value, even in in todays market which is a good thing , there always some one who will buy its just finding that person . Lovely colour remines me of my 418 tourer 😀

Possibly due to the lack of a sunroof? I’ve always loved a sunroof in an R8 and never fancied one without one.

If you get on the R8 Owners Group Facebook page Griffith 500 (does this mean you own one...? :cool ) there’s what looks a decent, reasonable mileage Nightfire Red car being sold for £450.

A true fan then! That’s a nice colour, don’t recall seeing many around that colour back in the day.

Hopefully later in the year I may be in a position to buy one, need to finish some house refurbishment first which is on Covid hold. You will have to get me posted on the progress.
