Wanted Serviceable R8 P/S Subframe

#1 Post by Mr Teddy Bear » Thu Nov 15, 2018 3:26 pm

I've really caught a cold with my latest purchase, it's just failed it's MOT on the main front subframe; just been told that welding rusty one's is no longer acceptable under the new MOT regulations. Got to confess that I didn't see that one coming, it must be buried some where in the small print?

So does anybody have a serviceable subframe suitable for a power steering rack that they're willing to sell please?

Rimmers don't seem to list it at all.

It might be worth a getting a second opinion on this, I think repairs to pressed steel subframes are allowed so long as the repair is seam welded and recreates the original strength.

I repaired a 3 inch hole on mine for the MOT back in May and it sailed through after.

Yes couldn't find it at first, until somebody sent me a link.

I've just been looking at the MOT manual and it say's that structural pressed steel subframes etc are not to be welded unless the original structural strength will remain unimpaired after repair. Now that Testers are subject to performance monitering etc, few will be prepared to take that risk.
