Straining wires for cabrio hood

#1 Post by cryptogram » Fri Sep 13, 2019 4:55 pm

I wonder if anyone has a source for the straining wires that run each side of a 216 hood. I'm replacing the hood and one of the wires is bust.

I don’t have a knowledge of the specifics of the cabby roof harness, but could you not extend the harness by soldering in a section of repair wire?

As long as the cable is of sufficient rating, the soldering neat and heatshrink (not horrible tape!) used to insulate the repair, I can’t see a problem?

When I replaced my hood last year I was lucky a previous owner had replaced the original tensioner wires with stainless items. But I have removed hoods where the wires have rusted & snapped.

If you remove the good wire take it to a Chandlers (boat rigging shop) & they will be able to make you some up.

Can you record the lengths - eyelet-to-eyelet - and take photos please, as you won't be the only person who'll need to get these parts replaced? :angel

They run above the side windows in between the outer hood and the headlining, on one each side.

They're item 14 in this exploded diagram - https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-GRID002946

Although they're not mentioned specifically, it might help you understand the construction of the hood if you have a look at this Rover Technical video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nslNea-mwY too
