"Project" 216GTi

#1 Post by 216GSi » Fri Jan 25, 2008 12:43 pm

It wasn't supposed to be, but my 216GTi has turned into a project.

While my sister in laws car was off the road with a suspected HGF (216 bubble) she had my GTi.

I fixed her car (water pump, which meant new cambelt which took me HOURS!) and then I FINALLY took ownership of my GTi.

I knew it needed a new clutch, but when I got it back, it sounded rough as you like - as if there was a bag of nails in the gearbox, plus a grinding noise from the NSF brake.

Not good.

I backed the car off the drive, only to see a huge shiny puddle on the drive.

Knackered water pump. Super.

I took off the NSF wheel. Warped disc. Even better.

I took a couple of days to think about keeping or scrapping the car, but in the end, I've decided to fix it. I've ordered all the OEM parts which arrived this morning, so first off will be the water pump *sigh* and cambelt and tensioners so at least I can hear the engine running again and see if the bag of nails was simply in protest of no coolant.

Providing thats OK, I'll give her a service and might even get some new HT leads on there.

Then come the brake pads and discs, and then it will go off for a new clutch.

I must be mad.

Well, here we are - just under three weeks later, and it's all done. Timing was out too, so as you can imagine, she's FLYING along now. When the sun comes out, I'll get some pictures done :)
