Deciphering the VIN number

#1 Post by Smithy » Tue May 29, 2007 11:56 pm

From the Rover Manual the Vin letters roughly mean.

S - Geographic Area
A - Country
X - Manufacturer
XW - Marque/Model
Y - Class
W - Body
A - Engine
B - Transmission and Steering
A - Model Change
D - Assembly Plant

So anyone know what the different letters you can get for Y/W/A/B/A and what they mean to make up the vin code?

I'm sure I have a list of all the stuff kicking about at home somewhere... I'll have a rummage for it tonight.

Right are you sitting comfortably? Theres a lot of information to list and it varies depending upon the age of your car as to how your translate it all!
Once you have your vin number compare its penultimate letter and all the subsequent numbers (e.g. SAXXWMBZEBD 001234) with the ranges shown below and then follow the corresponding post to decode it

1. VIN up to A798419

2. VIN A798420 to A871151 & B001001 onwards

3. 96 MY onwards (Coupe, Cabriolet & Tourer only)

Why does my 1995 214SI, have a lower number than my 1990 214 GSI?
The 1995 is 123***
The 1990 is 248***

Confused? :?

I am guessing one is an A and the other a B.

My parts catalogue doesn't have my car listed either, but you can still work out all these details from the info I posted in the posts above.

As skatiechik said, they have different model change designations. The GSI is effectively an 'A-spec' car and the SI is effectively a 'B-spec' car. When the model change letter went from A->B they also restarted the numbering, hence why the later car could have a lower number.

Mine's a 1993 GSi, with an SLi prefix!
Plus prefix letter 8 is an F, but that does not appear on the list....

I agree, the eighth letter on my GSI Vin is an E and this doesn't feature, it appears the single-point inj engines are missing from the list.
Furthermore my letter 6 is a Y and GSI is not listed against this number?
