Re: Honda ALB2 investigation- call for a broken pump

Sorry not me. I think Paul has two friends.. In Cambridgeshire Indeed I do :) But the other friend in Cambridgeshire didn't end up with Tim's old car (and hence the ALB setup). It went to Andrew in Yorkshire, who did a comprehensive job of stripping the car and saved the ALB pump. (Sadly neither of...

Re: 216 sd3 poor cold starting

The stepper motor is inside a housing screwed to the side of the carburettor: you should see some wiring connected to it via a plastic multiplug. There is a small rod that moves in and out to control the idle speed, in addition to the main mixture control drive which cannot be seen moving because it...

Re: How high is "High mileage" for 416 Honda engine?

Bearing in mind that my short term memory is shot (Luckily a side effect of Sepsis!), I seem to remember my mechanic saying that they're bulletproof, providing you change the coolant at regular intervals........I think! Yes, coolant changes are paramount. Many HG failures on aluminium engines start...

Re: GTI Track Car

Chances are, it is antisocial media that is to blame, TB. I would guess that one of your neighbours or maybe a delivery driver has kindly posted photos of your cars on Farcebook or similar, so they have become public knowledge. One of my friends who owns numerous older vehicles made the mistake of a...

Re: Torn between keeping or selling

How about a speculative advert in the club magazine (The Viking) to give all club members the first opportunity, followed up by a free advert on Carandclassic.co.uk (which will also generate an advert in one of the weekly classic car papers: I can't remember which). Difficult to place a value on you...

Re: Look what i found today....

You could take the risk of going in 'cheap', but that could then stir the landowner into thinking that he could do better. The scrap car industry seems reasonably savvy to the values of older cars nowadays and dealers will often chance their arm at flipping on ebay. I wouldn't mind betting that both...

Re: 216 sd3 poor cold starting

Definitely sounds like a weak fuel mixture, but you should still check that the ignition system is 100%.
I forgot to ask if you have topped up the carburettor damper with oil? If the level in there is low, it will cause the engine to cough and splutter when the accelerator pedal is pressed.

Re: 216 sd3 poor cold starting

Definitely check all of the electrical basics first (plugs and gaps, HT leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, make sure the top of the coil and its connections are clean and dry). Also check all of the vacuum pipes and hoses around the inlet manifold and carburettor area: you don't want any air leaks w...

Re: Rover 45 Diesel not revving

Another vote here for the MAF. If it dies completely (goes open circuit), the ECU assumes it isn't there and uses a 'default' value to keep the engine going (usually results in a rev 'ceiling' of 2500-3000rpm and a bit of a lag when you pull away from junctions etc) but if it only partially fails th...

Re: How do u refit a window?

If you don't already have one, I would advise you to buy a Haynes manual covering the 214. Used ones are readily available on eBay or Amazon for less than £10 and will help you to learn a lot about your car. R8s are definitely not difficult/complicated cars to work on, but even those of us who do a ...

Re: Rough cost of repairing paint damage

Well the easy part will be to get rid of the parking sensors! Just swap the rear bumper from your existing 45, as it is the same colour :wink3 Regarding the scrape on the wheelarch of the 'new' car, we have used our local 'Chips Away' (smart body repairs company) with great success on my wife's 25GT...

Re: Good places to restore your Rover?

Do you have a trusted friend or mechanic who could have a quick look at the car and get a rough idea of what might be needed. Specifically, find out if the engine is seized, as that would be a major game changer. All that is needed is a spanner or socket of the correct size to turn the crankshaft pu...
