Does sound a bit like the alternator is playing up. It should definitely be able to supply the auxiliaries without the lights dimming, even if the battery is a bit weak.
Cheers,
Hugh

Yes, I believe the regulator is in the alternator in the Rover 200, and it was the fault thaty caused the lights to go bright intermittently on my car. I confirmed this by connecting a voltmeter to the courtesy light in the glove compartment so I could read the volts when the lights were bright. Ove...

I agree. I've had problems like this on our 1990 214. You didn't say whether the lights go brighter than normal or dimmer. I had the lights go brighter intermittently, meaning the voltage was going high, which was due to a fault in the alternator. The battery didn't like it either! A new alternator ...

Scottish All Rover Rally
This event might be interesting for members in Scotland and North of England. Don't know if the Club was at last year's rally, but we could have a stand there this year - 24/25 May at Thirlstane in the Borders.

I had to replace the petrol tank on our G-reg 214 about 3 years ago. We'd been away for a few days and on arriving home, my wife commented she could smell petrol around the car. It was exactly the same situation of the tank being filled up and left. I put in a new one (cost about £160 I think), and ...

There is a slot or groove in the bodywork behind the bumper just in front of the front wheel that a round peg on the bumper should slide into when it is being refitted. Maybe somebody hasn't done this properly or the peg has broken off. You would need to take of the bumper to see this. You need to r...

Squeaking brakes
We've had that problem too with our Rover 214. It was OK until our son borrowed it for a week or two when his Peugeot 306 GTi6 was off the road. He drove the Rover in a similar fashion with some hard braking I suspect. Anyway when we got it back the front brakes squealed when applied gently. The pad...

Rover "moans" occasionally
Has anyone else got a Rover 214 that occasionally moans to itself when parked up and switched off. Our 1990 GSi, does it every now and again and also sometimes out on the road. It's done it as long as I can remember but doesn't show any running problems. Sounds a bit like the fuel pump. Cheers, Hugh
