Haynes did the 218 in the '95 on 200 series, but it seems that it's a petrol engine.

Another vote for the brake hose. I had similar on a P6 and after refurbishment of the calipers we found it was a collapsed brake hose, fifteen quid fix turned into several hundred because we didn't check them. Just get new ones and see how it goes.
