1999 is the changeover year. Before 1999, If it's an automatic, it will be a Honda Engine. If it's a manual, it will be a Rover engine. After 1999, all engines are Rover. In 1999, it could be either rule that applies!

And in answer to your second question - NO - the parts are not the same between the Rover and Honda engines. Everything is different.

It it's a Honda engine, then it's further complicated by the fact that there were 2 different version fitted.

It could be a D16Y3 (To SN-E299999)
Or it could be a D16B2 (SN-E100001)

I *think* that if your rocker cover looks like the one below, then it's a D16Y3. If it's just got the words "16 valve" in one corner and no horizontal casting lines, then it's a D16B2.

I.e. I think this is a D16Y3:

Best thing to do when trying to buy parts is to phone an X-parts stockist like Rimmer Bros, and tell them your reg. number and VIN plate number. Then they can tell you whether the part is correct for your car before you buy, and you'll then be able to know which engine you actually have if you want to buy parts yourself (e.g. aftermarket parts) from Ebay, etc.

Honda engine (I think this is a D16B2, not a D16Y3):
