Hi guys which battery do I need for an S Reg 1.6 coupe?
I have looked on different sites and seem to be able to fit batteries between £40 and £100 - help
Probably looking at Varta or Exide

An 063 or 065 will be fine-the Rover part number is YGD100780 according to my magic book.

Varta C6 is their name for type 063 battery, which is the same as the Bosch S5 001 (the Varta one is cheaper, it's just rebadged for Bosch).

This is the Silver-plated electrode version, which will give you 5 years of service and has one of the highest cold-cranking and capacity amperages around.

You can get the Mutlu type 063 from Rimmer Bros for the same price. It's a flooded battery and it has an even higher CCA and capacity rating!

I believe this is a Turkish manufacturer but that shouldn't put you off given the specification of the battery.

Halfords are doing a deal with what I think is good and a cracking battery that lasts had one on my alfa 10 years still going yuasa .

Fantastic. I never quite got to £50 but I think the cheapest I got a C6 for is £52.95. That was quite a while ago.

It lasted exactly 5 years - it was just out of guarantee when it failed.

Partly my fault as I left the battery connected over the first part of the Covid lockdown (through the winter) and after about 4 months the alarm had flattened the battery. It then wouldn't take a charge, fast or slow.

I think the next price I paid was £59.95 but that was a special offer at the time, cheapest I could find. That was a few years ago now and it's still in the car.

Who knows, if I'd remembered to take the battery off for the 4 months the car sat idle it could have lasted longer.

The Yuasa batteries are also very good. I purchased the Yuasa 5000 type 063 from Halfords (that's their "premium" range) for my other car and that gave up just inside the guarantee period, so I got a nice new one. The Ah and CCA ratings aren't quite as good as the Varta, but it's still an excellent battery. I remember in the 80s looking through the Maplin catalogue and Yuasa batteries were everywhere (the smaller sealed lead types for powered wheelchairs, burglar alarms, etc.) so they've been going a LONG time.

The Yuasa batteries have a reflective "green dot" good/bad indicator on the battery top. Vauxhall OE batteries have this too or at least they used to, so I'm wondering if they're Yuasa underneath. Hopefully, the Yuasa battery tester the Halfords staff member fishes out from under the counter to get a yes/no decision for a replacement under warranty goes your way...

Other notable super-hero batteries include the Hankook branded AGM type (grey with a yellow top). Really good CCA and Ah ratings but they're also rather expensive. If you want a different look in the engine bay, I suppose there's some extra appeal there.

I've found most batteries last about 8 to 9 years unless you get a dud. At least they are cheap. Even if they only last 5 years, it's about £10 a year, not much more than a gallon of fuel!

They have a fairly easy life on our cars - injection cars start almost immediately and then the alternator takes over. On my old 1960s cars, there's a bit of cranking as the carburettor comes to life.

I've used various batteries on the 214 over the last 32 years. It's our everyday car so they get a lot of use. The best one I've had was the last one made by Motrio. The guy in the motor factors said it was the make used by Renault. I put it on in June 2012. I replaced it this summer mainly because of its age, and it's now doing service on the Hillman Minx. I'm currently using a Halfords HCB063. When I took the Motrio off, I noticed it was made in Ukraine! I wonder if they are still making them.

I did have a trickle charger but have now bought a battery protector for mine

I have used a device called a CTEX MXS 5.0 battery charger/battery conditioner on my cars for several years.

This device can be permanently connected to the battery via a "nifty" waterproof connection or use the supplied crocodile clips. It will maintain the battery through periods of inactivity. No dead batteries now.

It's a bit pricey (costs around the same price of a 063 battery, around £55) but well worth the money. I have quite a few now!!
