Advice on Rear Heated Window not Working

Hi All hope you can help
I have recently replaced the tailgate wiring loom on my rover 216. It went succesfully thanks to the many guides on here, and my top brake light and rear windscreen wiper are working fine.
Unfortunately the Rear Heated Window does not seem to be working. It was still working intermittently on the old wiring loom, but that wiring loom was badly damaged and may have caused some shorts.
The light on the rear heated window button does not light up, but you can hear a click down by the fuse board / relay when you press the button.
What course of action can I take to try to diagnose the problem from where I am at the moment ??
Also on a second question, shoved inside the tailgate by the wiper motor was, what looked like, a white car washing sponge inside a clear plastic bag, literally a sponge in plastic. I can't tell if it looks like it's supposed to be in there or if someone has shoved it in there for some reason? any ideas on that too?
many thanks
