Have you tried adding fuel cleaner, eg Redex or Forte or similar, and taking it on a good long drive? This should help before the next emissions test. And the emissions are best tested when the engine is hot :)

I had shocking emissions on my car - lambda sensor which is screwed into the exhaust manifold was shot. Apparently they settle at 0.45v output when the car is warm. Mine was up and down which apparently shows it is duff. Swapped it for a new one and it sailed through the emission test. Was hard getting it out. Required an impact gun!

A healthy pre-cat lambda sensor should switch between 0.1 - 0.9v approx. at least once a second when the engine and sensor are both at operating temperature.

Apologies must have been the other way round. I recall it was not right. It messed with the emissions terribly.

One thing's for sure, that new catalytic converter needs to come off if it hasn't solved the problem and the original 1995 item with a scrap value of many £££££££s need to go back on! (The new one is likely to be an inferior aftermarket item that is very unlikely to last as long as an original).
