MOT passed

Post by 214GSI »

My 214si (Simon) passed his MOT today :D

Just a couple of advisory points, driveshaft boots begininng to show light perishing and emissions on the high side- told engine a touch 'fluffy' at constant rev- the tester noted the car still has its original dizzy cap - could be the cause.

So I'm happy tonight :D

That's good news :) It is always a relief (and occasionally a surprise!) when they pass isn't it?!?!

1995? Is that a bubble or a wedge?

The dizzy cap is a ten minute job - at risk of stating the blindingly obvious it is worth changing the rotor arm at the same time (assuming it hasn't been changed either).

The driveshaft boots are a bit of pain, but still "diy-able" without too much effort. The worse bit is freeing off the suspension bolts if they haven't been disturbed recently. Bailcast do a boot you can stretch over the CV joint without having to take it all apart. Could be worth a look.

That in-situ replacement boot sounds interesting Clive :D

With regard to the dizzy cap, I was as surprised as the tester- that it has the original?
He's pretty sure: because it has hexagonal bolt head screws and those were replaced by conventional slot head screws about a decade ago he says.
I know he's right because my 214GSI had quite an appetite for caps and I can remember the change.
I still have the GSi (for spares) so I'm gonna have a look at the cap and see if its still okay before buying another.

If you've got a "spares donor", personally I won't bother with replacing the boots, I'd just swap the drive shafts, assuming the donor DS are in good nick. The worse bit is having to buy new gearbox oil. Damn expensive :(

The donor hasn't been used for two and a half years, so I guess the boots are getting poor too.
The gearbox oil plug is a sticky for me at present, the former checker has rounded the corners  , I'm going to invest in some of those 'grip on the flats' sockets next time I'm at a tool stockist.

and thanks Lindz :D .
