FOR UPDATED FIGURES SEE THE END OF THE THREAD.

Hi all,

I have been able to obtain a list of most of the vehicle registrations of the Rover 220/420 turbos alongside the information provided via the website form. The list isn't 100% definitive (e.g it won't take into account those on private plates, etc) but it is accurate and gives us a good indication of survival rates. Of all the submissions via the website there were only 2 registrations which did not match with the list for the 220 hatch turbos.

Using the online tools available to us today e.g. the vehicle licence website. I have been able to confirm the vehicles current existence. This is by no mean feat as you can imagine (it has taken me around 12 hours). So apologies to the 400 owners your statistics will follow in due course when I get time.

The figures show that currently there are (from the register list):

Rover 220 GTi Turbo

Sorn: 14
Taxed: 17

Total (taxed and sorn): 31

Rover 220 GSi Turbo

Sorn: 15
Taxed: 37

Total (taxed and sorn): 52

If you are a Rover 220 Turbo Hatch, or 420 Turbo Owner and have not yet filled in the form with your details then please could you do so. All personal information will be kept confidental.

The form can be found here:

Changed details on mine recently and DVLA have cocked up :o :rolleyes

As a result, I don't think mine is included in your total there.

Thanks Lindsey.

I assume that 400 figure is a combination of the "GSi's" and the "GSi Sport's" to, isn't it?? :sad

I believe it contains both. All the online forms filled in which said Sports turbo cross-referenced to my list but were marked as just a GSi Turbo. Which leads me to believe that all the sports were just marked as GSi Turbo on the V5. Unless someone can prove different?

Typical Rover cocking up of range :S .Model range revision occurred in Nov 93 - i assume this would be when GSi Turbo begins.
There is a possibility of Sports Turbo on V5 .Would also be interesting to know of the last ones registered and colours
Any figures for 416Gti?

Rover often messed up. I had a genuine 420 GSI sport turbo that was registered as a GSI only (non turbo), but some digging by a dealer confirmed it to be a real sport turbo (the engine it was sold with was a turbo lump).

Interesting. I had one of these on the list of VIN/VRN I have - it maybe this one? Did you want to PM me the reg(VRN) and I will check?

That is really interesting and reveals an extremely low survival rate for these cars - if the 1100/500/250 figures that are often quoted are to be believed.

I have always thought that the 420GSi Sport Turbo debate has been a bit strange. In Turbo form, all the 420GSi models were Sport versions so they just dropped it when the 220GSi Turbo came out and they became 420GSi Turbo. I cannot see that there is much different between the 420GSi Turbo and the 420GSi Sport Turbo apart from model year changes (like the wheels) so Rover dropped the name and the DVLA certainly wouldn't be interested in such detail.
