Just how rare is the 220 GTi Turbo

After the 214 left, and I sold my show car I decided I just had to have another R8.

What with me now being *cough* over 25, I was tempted by the faster versions as insurance was now much more affordable.

I wanted a hatch as I felt the coupe was a bit too upmarket for me. So that left the choice of the GSi or GTi Turbo. I opted for the GTi turbo as I much prefer the earlier style grilles, no chrome and you get foglights.

Now it had to be an original. Some peope would say it doesn't matter, but to me it does. Would you believe it took me the best part of 10months to actually find one for sale. I travelled all the way to Southampton to pick him up.

Since then I have only ever seen three other genuine GTi Turbos. So that makes four including mine. I am always on the lookout there just isn't any. I see quite a few GSi Turbos around though.

Has anyone else spotted one?

No - like you I see a few GSi Turbo's but I've only ever seen a couple og GTi Turbos for sale, and they have normally been butchered!

It does make me sad when there is nothing wrong with them and they are scrapped :( I guess some people don't realise the GSi and GTi Turbos were made in limited numbers.

It was supposed to be a non-runner but I suspect it was something simple. By the time I got there it had been badly damaged and the glass had all been smashed so the interior was soaking wet.

The scrapyard owner was trying to make maximum profit. I phoned up to say I wanted the wheels and by the time I got there he had whipped the tyres off them and had them in a pile. Really annoying.

Be interesting to know the actual number behind each model. Ironically I see more GTi/GSi turbo's locally than coupes.

Yes it would be nice.

I am going to be placing a register page on the main website this week where people can email details if they spot one or own one for the ones which are rumoured to be rare. That should then give a good indication of the survival rate.

I haven't found or seen any since this thread was started. There used to be one locally that was Jap Spec and Black! It was gorgeous.
