Coupe fails its MOT

Took the Coupe for an MOT this afternoon and it failed on emmisions.
When the tester reved it I was looking at the numbers and all of a sudden they shot up they slowly came down but not enough. The car then ran lumpy and the tickover kept going up and down. It was as if something had opened and not closed as it was running fine before. Although the car settled down later it did it again on the way home.
Any ideas please?

Coolant temperature sensor is the usual culprit on most Rover engines-probably a good place to start.

Would that cause the symptoms of the rough running etc that I have described?

my cabby was running lumpy with loss of power even with my foot flat to the floor it turned out to be the cat the cat was rotten inside and the exhaust gasses could not escape quick enough just an idea

Yes it could, but of course other things could too, such as vacuum leaks/inlet manifold leaks etc.
I treat the CTS as a service item and change them routinely.

You were spot on. Had to have the ecu re-set aswell but it was the coolant sensor playing up. Passed now with flying colours
Many thanks

This is a really old post, but I am going to swap the ECU coolant temperature sensor on my 214 SEi shortly - however how does one "reset the ECU" as referred to above, and is this even necessary after changing the sensor?

Funnily enough my Turbo Coupe went in for the MOT test yesterday and we stopped at the test emissions due to high CO and lamda numbers...

Plugging a Crypton MAS tester into the diagnostics port came up with a coolant sensor fault flag, which I cleared and it didn't come back immediately, but I'm going to change the sensor anyway.

Will probably get a replacement lamda sensor too as I've only got a couple of weeks on the current ticket...

I think the MAS kit has the option to reset the ECU - I'll check. If safe to do so, I can probably post it to you if you're still in need :cool

Thanks John - I had a bit of a battle getting my car through the emissions during the MOT in July. I had the lambda changed and a new cat, but it was still touch and go. I didn't change the ECU temperature sensor so I'm thinking this is the way to go.

It's in an awkward spot so I'm thinking of getting the garage to do it as I think the coolant will need draining as the sensor looks in a too difficult spot to do it quickly (i.e. get the socket in and the sensor in and out speedily without losing too much coolant).
