The ABS light in my 216 is coming on and staying on after about quarter of a mile driving. I understand that there is a diagnostic plug but I am not sure where it is in the car, could somebody point me towards that please. Also please let me know which terminals to 'short' and what the codes are if poss.

Many thanks, Mark

Apparently there is one....'somewhere in the front of the car under the dash area' as I was told. I have a twin cam Honda in my Tourer and had an ABS fault as well. We pulled back the carpet and checked up under dash on the Left side of the car. We never found the plug. My Rover trained mechanic was adamant there will be one there, we just had to find it.
We never did!!
Apparently it can be anywhere in the wiring around the dash and centre console area on the left hand side of the car.

Hope you find it, and if you do, can you let me know where it was!!
Graeme

Graeme,

On the Coupe it is apparently on the right hand side of the steering wheel - have asked my garage to look for it as hopefully they know what to do! Will report back if/when they find it.

Cheers, Mark

Where to find the ABS diagnostic plug on a 1.6

According to the Rover manual AKM 6994, which covers 1993 models onwards (from VIN 605482), the diagnostic plug is located in a green plastic holder under the dashboard and to the right of the fusebox. The plug itself is coloured orange.

From the diagram, it would appear that you will have a better chance of accessing the plug if you remove the lower dash panel (3 screws?) rather than just flipping down the fuse cover.

How to check the self-diagnosis and display fault codes.

Make sure the ignition is switched off.
Bridge the two terminals on the diagnostic plug together.
Switch on the ignition, do not operate the starter.

The ABS warning lamp will come on for 1 second, then stay off for 2 seconds, then flash the fault code.

The fault code will only occur once for each time the ignition is switched on. If more flashes happen after a 5-second delay, there is more than one fault on the system (up to 3 codes can be displayed).

To repeat the code(s) turn the ignition off then back on again.

If no codes show up, the system will need to be tested using Rover 'Microcheck'.

After repairing the fault, erase the control unit's memory by removing fuse number 6 from the fusebox in the engine bay and replacing it after at least 3 seconds. Don't forget to disconnect the bridging wire that you have fitted to the diagnostic plug!

There are 23 possible fault codes and unfortunately I don't have time to post them all here at the moment.......
If I have time, I will scan the page from the manual and post it on here (I won't be offended if somebody else manages to post the fault codes before I do :) )

Thanks for that info on the plug location, I am going to go and see if I can find it now. Even the Honda dealer I took the car into thought it was on the left hand side as well!! I shall also put the Rover mechanic right as too!!
