Sagging Drivers Door on Cabriolet - Cause?

Post by ROVER Cabby »

My Drivers door on the Cabby has some slop to it, seems to catch the striker hard and needs a little lift to engage properly.

I had a look at the components on Rimmers, but does anyone know the exact cause and solution before I do something dumb like ordering all new hinges and pins etc. :slapme

Although, a new check strap wouldn't go a miss. :sleep

Have you tried to watch the hinge while picking up the door?

Is it frameless? perhaps try taking up the slop with a scissor jack with a block under the door bottom?

Hinges for 3-dr have been NLA for some years, unless some more have turned up since I looked. My 3-dr hatchback
had the same problem. As these doors are longer, there's more load on the hinge pins than in the 4- & 5-dr.

I diagnosed it as wear at the hinge pins, and lifted a door off to investigate. This is possible without unbolting the
hinges if the door is opened wide enough. On mine, the pins weren't obviously worn, but the mating holes were. I
discovered that a quality design job had been done, and the holes were bushed with oilite bushings. It was possible
to drift the bushes out for replacement. Unfortunately, I couldn't trace exact replacements, and ended up with a
PTFE-lined equivalent, similar to this.
Note, I'm not sure at this distance in time that this is the exact size I used.

Maybe it would be worth taking a chance on a 5-door hinge and extracting the bushes from it

Interesting, ive saved that site, they are cheap enough, it's a ways off yet, but once stripped i'll get the calipers out and check sizes.

Did it fix your issue?

Another interesting idea, do you think that could be feasable?

Pretty much!

I did similar to the windscreen wiper spindle bushes to stop the arms catching the bonnet edge as it
was lifted. Not so successful, I think the arms were actually slightly curled with age.
