Temp Gauge Level

Post by Lee-2246 »

Daft question, but where is the temp gauge supposed to sit? Mines always sat at around 1/4 maybe just over. Fan does kick in still but temp never gets to half way.

I did change the thermostat but still does the same thing.

Car: 220 Coupe Turbo.

Thanks,

Could be the temperature sensor for the gauge is reading low. You could measure its resistance at normal operating temperature and compare it to the spec. I guess the temperature should be around 85 - 90 degC when fully warmed up so you could check that with a thermometer where the coolant pipe leaves the head and see what the temperature is. The main issue here is that if the gauge did read mid-range (normal), the engine could be too hot.

I run a 220 GTi Turbo and the temp gauge sits the same as yours. I do find the heater is inconsistent, sometimes cold, sometimes lukewarm and occasionally it actually gets hot - so I don't know if this is normal on the 220 turbo or both of ours have a fault of some sort.

My 216 GTI (Honda DOHC) temp gauge always sits low, just under 1/2 way.
Been fine that way for 33 years, had a new thermostat in 2013, just as part of a refresh, same temp after.

Thanks,

If it helps. I noticed that the 620 ti’s temperature gauge hovers just below halfway.

My 1.6 K Series Cabby sits between 1/4 & 1/2, depending on ambient temp, Summer it's closer to 1/2, Winter it's closer to 1/4.

Heater always good.
