The R8 was launched 34 years ago today

Post by GTiJohn »

The R8 Rover 200 5 door was launch 34 years ago today. The cinematic TV advert made to launch the car was a departure for Rover and made a big impact.

This is the full 90-second version and it was only shown once, in the commercial break during Coronation Street on the evening of Wednesday October 11th 1989, due to cost. It was preceded by a week of 10-second 'teasers' to raise interest in what was to come.

The usual ad shown was still long at 60 seconds.

The filming took place in various locations in the North East of England
- The driving sequence was filmed on the North Yorkshire Moors, likely to have been around Hutton-le-Hole
- The railway crossing was on the Redcar steelworks
- The bridge was filmed the Tees Newport Bridge
- The steps and interior for the wedding was filmed at South Shields Town Hall

Where was the cobbled street shot taken?

The song was "Up where we belong" by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker, from the film "An Officer and a Gentleman".

We are hoping to be able to tell the full story of the making of this advert next year.

Hi John - just seen your excellent post. I often go through Hutton Le Hole on route to Whitby with the family, so I’ll check out the ad and see if I can spot it. I must admit to occasionally listening to that song in my 420!

I remember being amazed when it launched at how classy it was next to an Escort but also how stingy the equipment was for the price. Having gone with my mum to look at a Cavalier LS, an Escort mk5 LX and a 214si, the Rover was a world apart in quality even with wind up windows. She’d have got one had my father’s 820se fastback company car not been offered for a bargain price. That was a nice looking car but my god did it rust. I learned to drive in it but it always felt like you’d left the handbrake on. 120hp was not a lot for a big car.

It's definitely round there, so keep your eyes open :cool

I spend may a happy childhood day in Hutton Le Hole, so it's serendipitous that there was this connection later on :D
