R3 Sunroof Seal

Post by RussellBubble »

Hi all, hope we are well?

My R3 has a leaky sunroof so was assuming it's the seal?

Does anyone have any experience of this seal advertised on eBay at all? And how one would go about fitting it?

Many thanks in advance

Unfortunately, you’ll most likely find it’s the panel that’s corroded away underneath the seal. Fitting a new seal probably will not cure it, unless the corrosion is very superficial and can be cleaned up effectively.

New panels have been NLA for some time unfortunately, so it’s a case of finding a good used one…alongside everyone else who is looking!

Hi there, many thanks for the reply which I really do appreciate. Ahhh I see that actually makes sense to be honest, I can actually see corrosion directly around the glass from inside and that's with barely looking sat in the driver's seat so your probably right that it will be rotten underneath. Only just purchased the car and this was just from a quick wash that the headlining was soaking at the driver's side front corner of the sunroof and down the A pillar. Oh well,it's all about the challenge eh?

You may be able to clean up the corrosion enough to get a flat surface for the new seal (and silicone sealant) to get decent enough purchase on - it depends how confident you are with a wire wheel, emery paper and BiltHamber products!

There is a member @ thebrm.co.uk forum who fabricates new frames. You need to remove the glass and glue it to completely new frame. If you are interested I can pass you the contact.

They look fantastic - nice job!

How easy is it to remove the glass and bond to the new frame?

It's hard to say how hard something is, however I would say majority of people with a degree of ability should be able to do it, some glasses come out easier than other, I would save on average it's takes me 3 to 4 hours just to remove the glass as it's such a tight fitment up against the metal frame however it can be longer or shorter. I have sold 20 frames now with a couple going abroad. I have also built a few up complete for people, they send me the old sunroof and I refurb it and send it you back in a wooden crate I made.
