Archive of the old Rimmer Bros Parts Listings?

Post by ROVER Cabby »

As per title.

I'm trying to cross reference some R8 parts, but Rimmers only have partial listings these days, as they don't list times that they don't sell or are unavailable.

They used to have a list of part numbers on a numbered list breakdown. Does anybody have these archived somewhere?

I agree, the scaled-back parts list on Rimmers is a bit of a nuisance. They used to list everything including stuff NLA. I've got a couple of CDs of parts. The early ones on a system called Infomill which does the SD3 and R8 up to 1992 and other cars like Montego. Got a copy of this via the Club many moons ago. The problem now is that it is incompatible with modern computer software (browsers) so I have to run it on an old computer running XP and an old version of Firefox. Most of the stuff on these lists is NLA being over 30 years old. I do have another parts list I got off eBay which does later cars.

If we can get the files, it would be a handy thing to post on the Club website. When you phone up Rimmers, they do have the complete lists, not just the filtered lists on the website.

Agreed, it would be a valuable source.

I'm not a fan of pay walling, but if this info was added to the site, it should be a paid members perk.

The complete Electronic Part Catalogue is still seen as a valuable commercial commodity and we haven't persuaded owners to 'set it free', as it wouldn't half help owners find the correct part more easily.

We're still working on it...

Certainly seems to have been a 'valuable commercial commodity' to those who have been selling pirated copies on you-know-where over the last 20 odd years.

It would be good if they made it available for purchase on disc, even in a cut-down form as they have for RAVE. It doesn't have to be free ;)

I have access to the EPC, if you'd like me to look up a couple of numbers or cross reference anything, drop me a PM with your request.

As I mentioned earlier, the EPC I have for the early R8s and SD3 was called Infomill and came from MG Rover I believe. Copies were certainly around on CD and I got my copy from the founders of the Rover 200/400 Club around 2007/8. It has however become increasingly difficult to use with upgrades to browsers etc. (a bit like current web pages usually don't run on early version of Internet Explorer etc.). When I used to run it, the parts diagrams came up alongside the parts lists. These needed an add-on called Grafix or something like that. Found another add-on called Alternatif think it was. Anyway none of that works now, so the catalogue only gives part numbers and descriptions. However, the diagrams that come up on Rimmers website are the same, and complete, showing all the parts not just the ones they list. So you can get the reference number off the Rimmers diagram and use it to locate the part on the Infomill EPC. All very clunky.

It would be nice to have this available to the Club. I can certainly copy the CDs I have if they are any use.

In the last day or so, I've had problems with my old computer which runs XP and an early version of Firefox. The guy who fixed it put in a replacement hard drive, reloaded XP and Firefox (c.2015) which we tested runs the Infomill EPC. He said the EPC is very early and the software was looking for Netscape (a browser from long ago). He said Firefox was loosely based on Netscape which is presumably why the EPC will run on earlier versions of Firefox.

I found this reference to the Infomill EPC from a guy on the Montego Club Forum years ago. He's gone the route of running a virtual machine within Windows 10.

Virtual machines are invaluable. I use VirtualBox and also Wine on an Intel-powered Mac to
run my EPC and Honda Civic WSM CD's saved as ISO disc images.
