Project 216GSI - A Light Resto: Boot Leak Solved (hopefully)

Post by rover216GSIman »

Hey everyone!

Here's another post. A lot has happened since I last posted on the forum, largely because I now have a MK1 MX5 as my next project and various other things. I was looking to offload my project Rover to another enthusiast, but I've been kindly offered a barn local to me to store the car for the next couple of months! :clapping So I am pleased to still be part of the forum and the club. The plan is to hold on and use it as a car to get me to any British themed events, PoL, Leyland Motor Show etc. as well as using it as my winter run-around and for winter navigational runs too.

So with all this in mind I've been angling to continue some of the work I'd begun. Namely re-spraying the boot-lid (which i'll detail in another post along with the bottom of the passenger door.)

Rear Light Cluster Seal
The last week i've been trying to figure out why dampness still appears in the boot. I resolved myself to remove both rear light clusters as it seemed the most obvious starting point for water ingress. I found the l/h one was soaked in water and had let water in to the cluster itself. The gasket while intact, i figured was no longer up to the job. I cleaned and re-fitted it along with some new gasket sealer. I did the same for the drivers side only to find a previous owner had already carried this out! This probably goes some way to explain why there was never any water on that side. As luck would have it a tail-light bulb blew shortly after re-fitting, lukily I had one to hand and re-fitted in no time.

Removal of the clusters is easy enough to do, but space is a little tight and it can be hard to get the spanner on to the 9mm nuts, so best to take your time on it.

So far - so good - I've dried out the boot once again so I will be waiting for the next rain to see how it fares.

Here's a few pics

I deliberately was quite liberal with the amount of RTV silicone sealant I had applied :blushing

The next jobs will be to finish off the painting of the passenger drivers side door bottom in tempest grey and get the car ready for the NEC! :)

don't over tighten the bolts that hold the clusters in, this indents the foam seal and makes them pointless
