The steel ruler in one of my photographs shows them as 167mm rim to rim - that's 6.57" to be precise. 6.5" fit with a tiny gap all the way round.
Like the idea of using the mirror backs to mount tweeters. I'd just do a HF boost with the piezo ones and perhaps a wire-wound pot to alter the level/boost. I don't much fancy a full component system with crossovers and all. Problem is - piezo tweeters aren't as common as they used to be - they used to be all the rage but they seem a bit thin on the ground when I look at Ebay or car audio places online.
The rears could be replaced by making a new MDF parcel shelf and covering it to look nice. Some nice 8" units or some 6" x 9" elliptical ones perhaps.

Great thread, will come in handy if I upgrade the speakers, the factory ones are still working fine though.

They might be working fine, but you can get a better sound and for not much money either...

On a cabby down the motorway you need headphones not speakers *laughs*.

Well I tell you what. Just for you, I'll start working on noise-cancelling to get the cabin a bit quieter for you. I can't promise it will work with the hood down though - deriving anti-noise for all cars on the M25 simultaneously might be a bit tricky

But I do like a challenge

I actually have one already made. Needs recovering and new speakers (Think they are 8 inch ones in it at the moment!)
Needs a good home..........

Ooops forgot to include the link in my post above. This is the tweeters on the mirror backs.

Looks like that car needs its summer coat trimming...
You can also go the extra mile and put some sound proofing on the outside
