Just a thought - Englishman Herbert Arkroyd Stuart had a compression oil engine (no sparks) engine running 6 years before Diesel..................

Finally got to the car and.... I'd suggest that this should be attached somewhere!!
Was too late (and dark) to rectify, but hopefully this is the problem.
I followed the guidance from all so much appreciated.

Yes, I would guess that somewhere on the gearbox casing there is a bolt securing the lug that your cable has sheared away from!

Thanks for the pointer to the gearbox casing. Said it already but the info given when I first asked is much appreciated.
Am back first thing tomorrow to put it right and hopefully that's that..... back on the road.

Had a spare earth cable on another car so I've managed to fix that and Bob's your uncle: car is running!
Good support and guidance people, much appreciated. If any of you are up near Hull and need a brew, somewhere under cover to make running repairs or need a part, let ne know.
