Great piece of information on front speaker replacement. :clapping
Just replaced mine on my Tourer.
Have to change the rears too. Does somebody have information how to remove the trim to reach the rear ones?

Never taken apart a tourer so I don't know. On the hatch it's 3 screws to remove each panel at the side of the parcel shelf, once it's taken out. You also need to remove two bolts holding down the metal seat belt guide - then those side pieces just lift up and out of the way. You don't try and take the grilles out as they're glued in - they come away with the side pieces. The speakers bolt directly to the body metal above the rear arches effectively - 4 self-tapping screws.

Just checked and you are right. Three screws and the seatbeld anchor, so the Tourer is the same :)

Check they're 5.25" / 13.5cm (they are in the hatch) and away you go. Loads of choices, but difficult to get something with a decent low bass response in such a small size. I did wonder if I could squeeze in something bigger like an elliptical, but that's a job way down my list...

I have bought Pioneer 5,25" speakers and they simply slotted in. Even the mounting holes were in the same place :)

Good to see this thread. Will replace the speakers on 216 Coupe right after we finished installing the Bilstein shocks on the current truck project.

I've just had my front door panel off tonight to check speaker depth. I didn't realise you could reuse the mounts :clapping

yep, but you need self tappers to put the new speakers in but, yes i always use the original mounts where possible.

You can use small bolts - say M3 or M4 - but choose them long enough to make putting the nuts on the back easier as they come though in the fairly deep empty channel at the back of the surrounds, underneath the foam ring (which you pull off carefully and refit afterwards).

My two front speakers are shot. Given that this thread is several years old, are there any replacements that you can just drop into the original mounts without any modification? Too much to do to waste time trying to make things fit!!!
