Topcat Tomcat wrote: Sun Feb 13, 2022 5:41 pm I bet it does! Wafting back from Edinburgh to Glasgow in a 365 at 100 mph a while ago was in total contrast to the Hitachi 385 Mini S.H.I.T. in the opposite direction.
Yes. 'Wafting' is a good expression of the ease with which a 365 ate up the miles. Not unlike an R8
in fact, leaving you refreshed at journey's end. Another parallel, they were the parting shot of the
BR design engineers before privatisation. Yet another, their tasteful styling, free of short shelf-life
style gimmicks as compulsory on later stock. Their close family members still operate south of the
Thames, where they never get called on to exercise their suspension at the higher speeds the 365s
reached, operating out of Kings Cross.

To help those who haven't a clue what we're on about:

Sandy up platform I think!

Only downside to 365’s was the lack of air con in the passenger saloons, and virtual lack of air con in the cab-quite often it just made the cab warmer!

Only one being preserved (and in a static state unfortunately) is 524 I think. :sad

This thread seems to have diverted into a siding :wink3 Or maybe up a branch line??

Has any train/locomotive ever surpassed that design classic, the Inter City 125? :cool

Definitely not. My dream to drive one!

I agree! I won’t ever drive one, but I have assisted the Driver with a Brake Test in the rear Power Car during training. Happy Days.

As a bottom-of-range R8 owner, I wasn't fussed about aircon or lack of. (Provision was made in the design,
but it was left out to save money). Passengers could at least have a wind-in-hair experience if desired,
wouldn't suffocate when the juice failed while waiting for a depot technician to come round the fleet to
restart the train with his laptop, and a warm comfortable ride might be less exhausting than a temperate
jolting one. Only three-quarters of a train, from mixed sets is going to a small line in Kent, to be refitted
for use other than as a train.

I think part of the reason that Rovers (R8 vintage) are undervalued is that there are still quite a few about.

The Rover SD1 prices only shot up as they approached 40 years old and got rarer, people then jumped in and bought them.
The same should happen to early R8's, as I see a lot more going for scrappage now - now is the best time to get one.

Had mine valued by Classic car Weekly in 2017, as shown below:
(This shows 69 were on the road then - Now DVLA only shows 28 left)

Very nice! I do love CCW their valuations are usually on point....

Do you think that only the "halo" models of the GTI are likely to increase in value? Standard SLis and GSis? maybe not so much?

I think that’s mainly to do with the affinity to the Honda engine.

True ref Honda engine, it helps. But I think all models will increase in value, perhaps on a sliding scale.

Yh, I think when more people understand the early k series doesn't suffer HGF like the later ones, people will like the 214 and 414 too. Because ik plenty of ppl are put off by hearing the phrase k series
