Spent today with the plan of getting the GTi running. After going though the normal checks found yet again the fuel pump wasnt working as with the other two :headbanging Anyway after removing the fuel tank and then the fuel pump and sensor unit i was greeted with two lumps of solid rust :laughing2 So i spent 2 hours cleaning the tank the best i could and then another hour by putting the seized fuel pump in the freezer and gently working it free and being it back to life we had a running D16 A9 :clapping My plan is to get have it running for about half tank of fuel then i will drop tank again to check for anymore rust thats worked loose. Next i need to open up the engine to check that out and im hoping to have the car ready to join MG's on Track at Snetterton on May 21st :wink3

That fuel tank :scared :o

You’re obviously well aware of areas to check on a long standing vehicle and this is a great example of what happens to your fuel system too - Fuel breaking down and also evaporating leaving the whole system dry and vulnerable to corrosion.

Also interesting to see an internal ‘swirl pot’ fitted to the 216GTI’s.

Fantastic work :clapping

Did it smoke much (if at all) when you started it up? Any major leaks?

I've got 3 GTi tanks all have the swirl pot I was led to believe it was fitted to the 220's :S No leaks as of yet and only a tiny bit of smoke but that's likely down to me adding 1 litre of 10w40 to 5 litres of petrol, probably does nothing in reality but when we were working on old cars that had been sitting about when I was apprentice I was always told to do it so it's just stuck with me really :laughing2 still a little bit of oil in a cylinder that's been empty for a long time can't hurt

Seeing your now a expert on these honda 1.6 and I am just taking one to bits for the first time i have a question, the crankshaft pulley bolt to undo is it anticlockwise or clockwise ive been told its left hand thread of a passing honda mechanic so that would be clockwise but it seem tight to me so I have held my fire until I hear of someone who as done this deed . :thumbup ps I got lucky and it started up after 11 years in a barn pump working 💪
