You’re obviously well aware of areas to check on a long standing vehicle and this is a great example of what happens to your fuel system too - Fuel breaking down and also evaporating leaving the whole system dry and vulnerable to corrosion.
Also interesting to see an internal ‘swirl pot’ fitted to the 216GTI’s.

Did it smoke much (if at all) when you started it up? Any major leaks?

I can't find any but luckily the 5 door I brought had a brand new one in the boot from Rimmer's invoice date was 4 years ago tho
