So interesting turn of events, this no leaking southern car can't handle some proper northern rain.
Drivers footwell became a swimming pool during dorrs by the looks of it.
So quick game of follow the water (kettle poured from the outside) showed an issue with the door seal in the top left corner.
Now to wait for another downpour to check it.
On a side note, off to paint on Thursday
Only the damaged side for now as metal work required to put the door skin off will take the money for the full paint job.
Soon i'll need a new car to match my paint

Interesting to see the sprayers work as my boot lid looks like the counter top of a fairground
ride ticket booth, bonnet will need work too on the nose and then that rear O/S corner needs
investigating.

Southern rain is hard enough and never had a leak, must be that Northern atmosphere ruining the rubber with all that acid from the old factories you all work in

its going to be in paint for a week so it will have another halfraud car cover waiting for it when it comes out.

What a pleasant surprise! Nice to see my old Gti getting some well earned TLC. I was the previous owner prior to Numptey and I actually bought it from a dealer near Shrewsbury as a non-runner that had been in storage for about 9 years. So its actually a northern car! I,ve been reading these previous posts with interest and can fill in a few of the loose ends..The pass. side control unit was my doing as was the odd door speaker in the drivers side! It was completely shot and I happened to have an odd one lying around. Its interesting to see what you found after lifting the head. I never touched it engine-wise apart from oil/filter and replacing service items. I replaced the radiator on discovering a bad case of corrosion etc at the bottom so while the rad was out I went to great lengths to flush out the block and heater. Now, on the subject of the green"live"wires you found in the drivers door I am 99% sure that these were the left overs from an old aftermarket remote cenral locking/alarm system which never worked properly so I had a friend take it all out. I know you will probably trace where that wiring goes but I,m pretty confident that its not connected to anything at the other end, I remember my friend telling me that because of the hassle in removing all the associated wiring he had left some of it in. I did several trips in the car after this job was completed and never had any problems. Interesting that you mentioned it was running quite well, I thought so too. On one occasion when my 416 Tourers HG failed on me I had to press the Gti into "get me to work" service which entailed a trip from Northampton to Canterbury and back 10 days later which it completed with ease at speeds of up to 80mph and returning 32 mpg. The paintwork i,m afraid did let it down somewhat. My friend, who is a painter came to the conclusion that it had been resprayed in the past but the colour coat hadnt been flatted down properly before the clear had been applied which meant that not much could be done with it. Its pretty obvious that the car has had a somewhat chequered history but at least I managed to rescue it and get it to a usable condition. Reason for selling it? well having taken a HGF on the tourer and then having to complete major wheel arch surgery too for the Mot the Gti was unfortunately sold to provide funds for the Tourer. I,m still into R8,s, I have a very respectable 93 214si 3 dr in the garage in dark metallic green/beige interior and just 53000 mls. Unfortunately owing to work and other commitments I,m not on here very often but I look forward to reading the rest of this story with interest!

Life of owning a classic cars means permanent disappointment, just like today. Took the car round the block to clean the brakes off today ready for going into paint on thursday and the water pump gives up.
Of all the pain in the beep things to go with the time scales i had in mind.
New pump ordered for a whopping £10.60 (oe nos) and looks like i'll be doing my first m-series water pump.
