Oh dear. It's failed its MOT, both on the CO emissions and a hole in the sill next to the rear offside jacking point.

Shouldn’t be too much trouble to sort?Topcat Tomcat wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 3:48 pm Oh dear. It's failed its MOT, both on the CO emissions and a hole in the sill next to the rear offside jacking point.

Hopefully not. The mechanic thinks a new CAT is required for the CO. I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to sort the slightly deformed sill at the same time.
I will have to think about it.

Incidentally, you can see the deformation in the offside sill in one of the photos.

Being a 1990 car, it doesn't actually need a cat. (Compulsory from 1992/K-reg onwards from what I can remember). You could either fit a decat pipe section in its place or buy a non-cat centre exhaust section.
Obviously check all of the 'usual' stuff too, such as plugs and leads, thermostat and air filter. And dare I say an 'Italian tune-up'??! (Make sure it has a decent cambelt, though!)

Thanks for that. Would not removing the CAT not make things worse?

There are a number of differences between the cat/non cat D16 single cam engines, engine breathing system, fuel tank breather and I would expect a different ECU? The non cat engines produce about 113 BHP, with a cat 109 I think.
Has the exhaust down pipe got a cat sensor in it? it might have been modified by a previous owner is what I'm getting at. If not as has been suggested just remove the cat.
That is a beautiful shade of Blue looks like mine, it changes as the light changes, not as blue to the naked eye as the digital camera has made it look?

Re: FS 1990 216 GSi Auto 42K - £1,250 Hampshire
Removing the cat should not affect the running of the car in an adverse way. I had a new 216 Coupe in 1993 and I fitted a non-cat exhaust centre section to it straight away: there were never any problems with the way the car ran and no warning lights came on. I refitted the cat after 2 years and 50,000 miles before the car was sold on.
I have also done a little research and discovered that a car registered before 1/8/1992 should not have to pass the 'cat' emissions test even if a cat is fitted. It will be subjected to exactly the same test as any other petrol car registered between 1975 and 1992.

I must admit that I do like the colour. A lovely finish as well. Virtually no 'orange peel' visible either, in total contrast to many contemporary vehicles!Topcat Tomcat wrote: ↑Fri May 07, 2021 1:21 pmMr Teddy Bear wrote: ↑Fri May 07, 2021 8:59 am

As always, plenty to think about when we get back from Scotland! Thanks everyone.

Fast Idle Test -
CO - O.726
HC - 28
Lambda - 1.000
Second Fast Idle Test -
CO - O.898
HC - 23
Lambda - 1.017
Do the above figures suggest a specific problem to anyone?
