Can be found on a popular auction side in a spray can :wink3

People who know me will no doubt confirm that confusion is my constant companion at the moment, but why would you need spray paint, unless it was a specialist paint for restoring the plastic trim to as new?

If anything, would not the code be for colouring the plastic feedstock during manufacturing?

My Brain hurts!

Thanks. I must admit that I’m really pleased with it. The Bodyshop has done a really good job.

Some might regard the cost as expensive, but it included the the doors coming off (I’m not sure that there isn’t a more satisfying, quality sound when they’re closed!) and welding in a new offside sill section. They wanted to take the glass out, but it appeared to be solid around the windscreen and I didn’t want to risk breaking the tailgate one!

Also, so long as I was sensible and didn’t get in their way, they were happy for me to turn up unannounced to check on progress.

Plus they are always busy, which I think is a good sign, and they tackle quite a few classics as well.

Not sure if I've missed the price quote. I assume it was a four-figure sum but I can only guess what the first figure was. Mine was 5K and it was glass-out but I did the strip and rebuild myself (which only saved me £500 in body shop labour). I did take them new doors, a new bonnet and a new hatch (as Rimmer Bros were selling them off for some ridiculously cheap price including delivery) so they had a fair bit of gapping to do.

PS. Perhaps LOQ paint was used on some earlier cars? If it's Tempest Grey 1 then it implies it may have been used in other applications prior to the R8, and BL/BMC/AR/Rover/MGR never deleted a paint code once established. Yes, LOQ defines the colour so it was about getting the correct colour moulded plastic. I guess they chose TG1 and TG2 for the trim and lower half to create a subtle contrast which looks nicer than them actually being exactly the same colour? And I agree with Hammond that LOG (TG1) is useful these days for colour-restoring faded trim. Better in a matt or satin finish for this, I would have thought.

It cost £4,080, which also included a new offside wing, so all in all, a similar quote I guess.

What is the rule concerning the grey plastic mouldings and the R8s? Which models had them and which didn't and why?
Thanks in anticipation of any information.

All versions of the R8 had a plastic side moulding.

Grey was used from 1989 to 1993 on most versions, generally with a claret insert. From 1994 onwards, black tended to be used with a bright insert.

The exception to this was the 3-door GTi models which used the same moulding but painted in body colour. This had a black or bright red insert, depending on the body colour.

Thanks for the reply. Are there not some models -(416 later models for example) though, don’t have the full 1/2 door mouldings but a thin strip- is there a rule here? Thanks in anticipation of any info
