R8 35th Anniversary Event - Sunday 15th Sept 2024
Re: R8 35th Anniversary Event - Sunday 15th Sept 2024
Good luck with the event on Sunday. Sorry to have missed another great event organised by the club. Will be attending a local event with my local car club. I have a few business cards for the 200/400 club, so I’ll see if I can attract some members whilst I’m there

Awesome day today - thank you John, Jeremy and all involved - what a huge amount of organising that must have taken. Really appreciate it. Loved the wedding car and fake plates on the car in front of the steps to match the advert!
I think my friend may right now be shopping for a 216GTI if anyone has one for sale!
Also the Mayoress (have I got that right?) was utterly charming and the tour really enjoyable.
Not sure if this can be topped in the future!

Thanks to everyone involved in organising and running the event. It was a real pleasure to meet people, put faces to names... and see so many Rovers in one place!
Hope you all got home safely.

Well that was a bit of a blur but what fun!
These are the few photos I took over the weekend - there'll be lots more added in the Events section of the website when we've recovered.
Due to an accident near York, causing us to detour through the city centre, we missed the chance to drive through Hutton-le-Hole and over Blakey Ridge, and instead we drove straight to the Tees Newport Bridge.

We stayed for a couple of hours and were joined by Steve, Jeremy, Jack and Chris. Several more cars arrived just after we'd left...
We had a meeting (in a pub) with Mark from South Shields Town Hall to go over 'final arrangements'
After a very nice fish and chip supper with Chris, Jack, Paul and Theresa we retired early so as to be ready for the fun to begin the next morning.
We weren't first to arrive at the town hall, with Jeremy and Steve and David, with the Armstrong Siddeley limo, already in situ outside the front steps.

Over the next 2 hours everyone arrived and lots of photos and chatting happened. Some running up and down steps may also have taken place
We were then treated to a tour - led by Faye, the Mayor - of the wonderful building and saw all the places the shots from the advert were taken. Jeremy and I then gave talks about the launch of the R8 and the filming of the advert, both of which we think we've filmed and if so, we'll upload them to the club's YouTube channel when we've worked out how to get them from the phones used
Then it was time for the buffet, which was more than we all could eat!
More chatting followed, along with even more smiling and finally we had to let the staff, who'd looked after us so well all day, go home.
Thanks to everyone involved in making this such an enjoyable weekend - it was so much fun we might have to think about TG@40

A great weekend. Thank you to all who attended. 706 miles in my red 214SLi, at 51.4mpg and 515 miles in No.1 (No.1 had a rest day on Saturday!) , 214GSi, at 46.8mpg. Not bad for 33 and 35 yr old cars, especially as we took the SLi over the moors up and down 1 in 3 and 1 in 4 hills in places!

The 2 videos of the presentations given inside South Shields town hall are now available to view on the club's YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... ysa6f3NTNV
Apologies for missing the end of the first one. If anybody present took any footage and has the missing part, please let me know.
The story of the making of The Graduate TV advert, researched and written by automotive historian David Morgan, will feature in issue 32 of Classic.Retro.Modern magazine, out at the end of the year. It's a fab mag, get it on your Xmas list !
