mg zs 180 wont turn one way

#1 Post by Vinny1979 » Sat Apr 17, 2021 7:01 pm

:laughing2

Well the rover 220 gsit is next to it so this counts as a rover question

My zs 180 mk2 has been parked up for a year or so, and i went to move it, and the wheel will only turn one way. Its as if something has broken and it wont turn right :D

Any thoughts??

If you can undo the steering rack's outer ball joints - one at a time or both at the same time - you'll be able to determine what's causing your problem as you'll be able to see if the hubs move freely.

If one or both don't then it's likely to be seized damper top mounts or lower ball joints and you'll need to replace them.

If they do then it's in the rack or column. You can find out which by undoing the steering column lower UJ.

Finding the cause of the jam is very important as you don't want it coming back when you're driving :scared

So the rack had kind of seized, after turning lock to as best as i could it kinda "clicked" and now goes to full lock, however upon reaching a certain point it clicks/pings and then turns again, I presume this is some corrosion or something inside the rack?? I doubt there is an easy fix?

Next issue is the bonnet wont close, its as if the cable has stuck as when i pull the release handle it is slack :laughing2

I wouldn't drive it like that.

You might have chipped a tooth on the rack or the pinion or have some other debris which is getting stuck in the mesh between the rack and the pinion.

A change is the only safe route but stripping this down might be interesting to find out what happened so don't bin it.

ZSs have restricted rack travel, to prevent tyre fouls to the inner wheelarch, so you need a ZR replacement-, not any-old 25- rack.

Thank you

It looks as though it’s quite easy to remove?

I may be wrong :D :laughing2

At least some WD40 makes this an easy fix

I’m not sure where to spray *laughs*

It’s a double catch?

But one cable?

I'd unbolt the bonnet catch, disconnect it from the cable, and make sure the catch and cable are
working smoothly independently. WD40 perhaps to free up the catch, then a drop of oil on the
pivots and sliding surfaces to keep it smooth.

There are a couple of things to be aware of:-

1) The rack mounting bolts into the subframe will be tight/corroded so liberal application of penetrating oil beforehand is a very good idea, as is applying tightening torque first to 'crack' the joint.

2) You'll need to take both tie-rods off and turn the rack to full-lock one way (can remember which way) to get it out of the beam. Taking the bottom UJ off the column and using this to turn the pinion usually helps.

Also take care with the feed and return PAS pipes not to damage the nuts and keep them clean so they seal properly when reattached.
