Power Steering Fluid Issue?

Post by Plodder »

Just got everything back together from doing a cam belt change on my 91 416 DOHC and noticed the power steering fluid seems to be churning about.
I have tried to prime the system whilst it’s on the axle stands by turning it to full lock on both directions.

Is this normal or have I got an air leak /lock somewhere?

The previous fluid reservoir was so dirty on the inside that I probably wouldn’t have seen this happening.

I’ve also adjust the belt but I still get a squawk from the pump on full lock ( but not during turning).
I think this is normal but I’ve never put the steering on full lock with the bonnet up so it’s difficult to gauge if the sound is normal or worse than normal.

Once I’ve got this sorted I can drop it off the axle stands and take it for a run to blow the cobwebs and stale petrol away :D

Any input would be grateful appreciated.

I think the churning about that you are seeing is probably normal - the fluid in the power steering reservoir on both my ZRs swirls around fairly rapidly when the engine is running and therefore driving the steering pump.

Yes thanks for that.
It seems to have settled down a bit now.
I had to top it up slightly so there was obviously some air in it but all good now.
Thanks for replying
