Best exhaust bore size for 216GTi twincam

Post by Ecobwg »

Hi,

Whats the best bore size for an exhaust on a 216GTi twincam 16v (or 216 cabrio with same engine).

The reason I ask is that I'm doing a conversion to D16a1 on a Mk1 200 with the intention of making it into what the Vitesse could have been, so want it to look and sound standard but don't want it to be unnecessarily restricted.

Oh, and whats the standard bore size for the GTi?

Cheers,
Barry.
P.S. I have a friend I've just persuaded to buy a 220 turbo coupe

Hi. The original factory prepped racecars used a Janspeed 2 1/4 " system. Think the originals 2". Were just building a new race car and making up a 2 1/2" system.

Cheers for the quick reply.

I do like your race 216GTis. They really suit the track look.

Just got back on to this after a manic 6 months at work and then a trip to Nurburg. ;)

The situation is that I'm now going to run bike carbs (Yamaha R1) and a Megajolt ignition. I've got a Japspeed 4-2-1 exhaust manifold coming off the engine. I've said I'll be happy with 150-160 from this set up although I know of someone with a 3 door civic hatch with the same set-up running over 180.

The thing is though, I don't want the exhaust to be too noisy (audible is OK) and I also want a spread of torque through the revs even if it as the expense of outright peak power.

I'm thinking 2&1/4" with 2 fair sized boxes, does this sound right?

We running 164bhp with std injection and Spoon non programmable ecu. 10.5:1 CR with a really good head and valve job. Mugen cams and adjustable gears / fuel pressure regulator.Same exhaust as you. But 2 and a half inch bore.

Managed to beat all the 2 litre cars at Oulton Park yesterday!

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll go for a 2 1/4" system.

Stubby44, are you limited to running the standard PGMFi injection and inlet manifold? It looks quite restrictive in its standard form. I know the D16a1 pistons have a higher deck than the a9 which may help with compression a little.
