What are these wires and how easy to fix?

Post by harkins77 »

As I mentioned in a help thread earlier I have a couple of other problems in the engine bay of the GTI that have just cropped up.

I have noticed that one of the brown connectors that goes to what I think is the thermostat was held onto the terminal with a cable tie and with the removing of the alternator has shown this up and I want to be able to make a more reliable connection.

Does anyone know if it will be a new loom job or just a simple crimping of new connectors onto the terminal.

Not only that I've noticed another wire that has a cheap audio connector blue thing on the end and I have no idea again what it is. All I know is that the connector doesn't stay connected to another bolt fitting.

Now I've had a look at the 800 series section in the haynes manual that covers my engine and I cannot see for the life of me if this is a simple repair or a right can of worms.

Here are the pictures I've taken to show what i mean.

The first one is of the terminals that the 2 wires connect to.

The 2nd shows the wires by themselves

And finally this is what they both look like when they are put in place but they are not secure connections

Any help would be appreciated.

They're both temperature sensors. The brown twin connector is to the ECU to control fueling etc, the single, bullet type connector is for the gauge.

Providing they're both making a connection, I'd not worry too much about looks, and your wouldn't be the first or the last one cable tied on!

You may be able to swap the brown plug with another from a scrap loom if you can find one, it's a pretty standard twin pin connector on Rover looms so shouldn't prove too difficult to find in a scrappy, you will need a really thin pointed item to press the pins in holding the wires in place to remove it, but this may do the job just as well and be easier to fit straight off.

The red connector is no different to what Rover used, bar it being black.

Yep, the sensors are just a standard temp sensor, and should be available from all good factors, and accessory shops, hell even hellfrauds should carry them.

Well halfords couldn't help me and all the other parts suppliers are now closed. I'll give them a try tomorrow but from what the lad said that Andrew Page sends to them it sounds like the wrong type.

That brown connector was just taped on when i bought the car so i put the cable tie on, and the single connector for the temp guage, i changed that in the first week of me having the car, i bought it from my local motor factors, but it does look like the terminal has broken off in the blue connector that's why it wont stay on the sensor.
So you will either have to try and remove the broken piece from inside the connector or change the connector for a new one which is just crimped on.
If i remember right the temp guage sensor and the radiator fan switch (which is also new) are the same as many BL cars including the original mini.

Hi Neil got it sorted one of the lads local to me had a replacement sensor and fitted it for me as well he spliced the above connectors wiring to a plug he had and it's now working a treat.

The car will be going to the BL weekend for definite now.
