Beware!

Post by Sir Henry »

Just been to my local ASDA (corner of Doncaster Road and Aldwark Lane, Rotherham) to do a spot of top up shopping. Since my disabled badge is in the Dodge (flat battery, of course) I parked in general parking.
When I came out I noticed that my boot mounted rear camera had been twisted sideways. I couldn't immediately think how as I wasn't parked 'nose to tail' with another car and I've got a swan neck tow bar on the car.
When I got home all was, eventually, revealed. The boot wouldn't lock after I emptied it. Fiddling showed that the moving hook wasn't moving correctly so I removed the whole mechanism and took it indoors. After a while I realised that the operating spring had become disconnected from its retainers - at both ends! Since the whole thing is riveted together it took quite a bit of wangling and wiggling to get it all correctly aligned again.
Once outside and ready to replace it, I looked at it again and saw that the casing was distorted. Gently twisting it back into shape was enough to see it fitted again and, following some careful adjustment, fully working.
I have to assume that someone tried to force the lid, but gave up before they could succeed in opening it. Fortunately there's only a few cheap hand tools in it as a general rule. The same tools I used to fix it!
