416SLi steering rack

Post by cox.paul »

HI Folks,
I have a problem with my 416SLi tourer. The steering suddenly went very light and although driveable at low speed its not safe.
My mechanic cant find anything obvious wrong but advice seems to be that the C Spring may be broken and a new rack needed.
The cars chassis number is SAXXWYTMCBD073028 and reg date was 29/9/94.
Can anyone help , do you have a replacement rack or do you know where I can get one?
Much appreciated

Thank you . Do you know where I can source one for this year/model? Paul

I've been trying to source a new, or reconditioned one for a 1.6 K-Series 400 Tourer (1997) for a while now and the only place that shows as doing them is Rimmer Bros at £500ish (ouch). I believe the part number is QEB000250, but I'm not sure if this is the only one that will fit. But, at 1994, is the OP's Tourer a K-Series or a Honda engine? Is it the same rack for both engines?

On Ebay there is a seller who claims to refurbish Rover 200/400 steering racks for £185 but I have not contacted them up to yet, as I'm not in a position to take the old one out yet.

It's the Positive Centre Feel (PCF) spring inside the rack that's almost certainly bust but Craig's correct, it's (currently) not serviceable :sad

PCF was a simple device to increase steering wheel effort on 'on centre', which had been a criticism of many power steering systems. It consists of a spring steel C-spring opened by two pegs on the steering gear input shaft and the housing. Unfortunately this C-spring fatigues and snaps leaving the system feeling very light.

The spring was never a serviceable part but probably could be if someone found a way to reman the part....
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos
