I have had pretty much all these causes, but the main one I have struggled with is the boot seal.
If the catch doesnt pull the boot shut pretty tightly (on hatchback) I get water leaking in high up in the area above the boot interior light on both sides.
so if you have this issue you can try and adjust the boot latch to close tighter and see if that helps

Re: Rear Light Cluster Leak
I have a leak in the boot of my 1990 216 5 Door. I thought that I had sorted it by re-sealing the boot vent.
Unfortunately, a small amount is still getting in. It appears to be running down the air outlet duct, onto the boot vent and down onto the floor. The trouble is, I can't work out where the initial leak is.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Rear Light Cluster Leak
I have this mysterious wet boot issue too...
I was in the boot all afternoon yesterday after detailing the car.
All areas mentioned above are bone dry... apart from the area around the base of the vent on the passenger side. I assume this is just down to condensation and there is not a lot I can do about it
