Not another problem Headgasket or not

Post by steven price »

Hello when i changed my gearbox water started to leak from under the exhaust manifold its got antifreeze in the leaking water. the head gasket was changed 8,000miles ago and the car has been serviced every 6,000miles. Dose the head need retighting after a while. no signs of water and oil mixing. I only dose it when parked up not when hot.
Any suggestions

Probably a core plug there's a how to on Rovertech. We talking K or T?

If you have a T series, here you go..

there are 4 on the back of the block, one behind the gearbox adaptor plate and two on the front of the engine ...and two small ones on each side of the head.

from what ive heard the one behind the gearbox adaptor plate is the first to rot thru.

dont go knocking them all the way thru ...once you do this they are ruined and will be a loose fit ....and you have to start again with a new one ....

you only got one chance with to do it

Coreplug Replacement.

Various manuals and magazine's will tell you to do it by puncturing a hole in the middle of the plug ...then to wangle it out...somehow !!! ..

Well I don't do it that way ..........I do it as follows:-

1. I chose an intact core plug to show this demonstration...if I did it with the other one ..all you would see is a tangled mess in the pictures.

This method is to be used on the block only ..

2. Place blunt screwdriver or chisel into the side of the plug ..and begin to tap with hammer.
The idea is to twist it in its hole like a butterfly valve.

3.continue to tap more.

4.

5.

6. At this position...it can be just flicked out.

7.out

Next you clean the holes up.

Hope this is a good guide ...its very hard taking photo's and holding a screwdriver at the same time .

[You can be generous with the sealant (Hylomar)..it's only the cooling system.
Here you see coreplug hole awaiting core plug.

The core plugs were hylomared too...
These "ultraparts" core plugs are of thinner material than the old ones ......so I pasted a lot of hylomar on their backs as protection.

I started the core plug home with a 19mm socket ,,, when I got it started I then just lightly tapped around the edge on all sides with a small hammer...until flush with outside
