Thanks for the suggestions. Checked the HT with a lamp and no spark and also laying spark plug on the earth cable and no spark... so looks like coil and/or igniter.
Someone has kindly offered to loan me their 'spares' to help identify which of these is at fault so hopefully have it working midweek.
Cheers

I'm only familiar with the K series 1.4 engine, but I had this problem a few years ago and it was the crank shaft sensor that had gone open circuit. No output from that to the ECU means no spark.

Ditto

How many miles has it done? they don't have a reputation for snapping unless it's the original belt.

That speaks volumes about Honda quality :)

Ford Escort owners were lucky if their belts lasted for the recommended 3 years and 36,000 miles :laughing2

General Japanese quality - I took a 26 year old belt off a Mazda MX-5 and it still looked like new :cool

Unlike the D-series, the Mazda engine isn't 'safe', so belt failure is usually v expensive!
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos
