New number plate law

Post by Clawjaw »

Anyone herd bout this?

If your number plate isnt a standard legal: Standard or 3D font with only the legal pics on the sides of them like the GB one then insurance companys will not pay out in the event of an accident.

Im not bothered as i personally belive that a plane, standard font with the rest of the plate blank look real nice.

I read about this a week or so ago, cant rememebr where, might have been in the paper :S

Absolute rubbish. Your car didn't come fitted with a new euro style plate so they can't force you to change it. However you'll find that places will only supply new euro plates as replacements as that is all they are legally allowed to.

However the police are now pretty hot on non standard fonts and spacings on plates as they are using ANPR more and more and those plates cant be ANPR'd easily. If you have one then you'll get a fine and told to sort it out.

No what i mean Dan is that if you have a number plate that has pictures which arent legal. Not that you have to have plates with euro or GB pics on their sides. The only legal pictures allowed on a number plate are the standard Euro, GB, England and Scotland ones etc. :thumbup1

I erm, think :D

Ahh I see.

Well in technically they aren't legal, however for an insurer not to pay out you have to have increased the risk of the vehicle without telling them. I'm pretty sure that in court no judge would find a funny logo a reason for them not to pay out, as it doesn't increase the risk of having an accident or having your vehicle stolen.

strange but just seen this, i had my mot a couple of months ago, i have a standard font, with gb euro badge to the left, with a border and website address at the bottom, and it has a honeycomb background.

guy at mot station said it could fail for the honeycomb background , but after a chat with another mot tester he let it pass, of course i also mentioned the fact it was on the car when i bought it,.

The stupid thing about that is the people with ridiculous plates are obviously going to take them off for MOT.

I notice aroudn Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire they are clamping down on bikes for both dodgy plates, and tax dodging (some 60% don't pay it! :o).

They don't seem to be clamping down on it in Gloucestershire. I probably see at least 2 individual people a day with illegal plates.

To be honest I don't really care but the whole number plate law seems to be enforced so that the police can guarantee they can make you out from one of their speed camera's. Policing at its best!

Regarding police and MOT testers its what mood they are in. If they had a barny with the wife before work you can look out :)
One point regarding plate recognition, its not just for speed camera,s. They need to read plates to catch uninsured cars, non taxed cars this also helps with banned drivers etc. I have to admit I am all for that, these people should not be on the road so the more they catch the better. At the end of the day, how would you feel if you were hit by an unisured driver ?
