Diesel won't die. Vacuum pump?

Post by Azezel »

My XUD 7 TD won't stop running after I turn the ignition off. I can even take the key out and wander of, it just keeps ticking over.

My guess (and it's only that, I could be wrong) is that the vacuum pump is at fault, not stopping the fuel flow.

I've never had to deal with something like this without a Hayne's Manual at my side, so I've got some questions.

Where is the vac pump located on a Diesel 200?, what sort of fault should I be looking for, if it is the pump that is faulty?

Also, any other suggestions as to where the problem may lie?

I don't think it is the ignition, since it feels smoothe, and checks out electrically.

It is almost certainly the stop solonoid that is faulty. You simply undo the wire to it, unscrew it from the fuel injection pump and insert another then replace the wire.

E_T_V - Thanks - never ocured to me, I'll check it out in the morning.

Skorpionokx - It did do my head in - when the motor wouldn't stop I opened the bleed screw on the fuel filter to kill it. It wasn't until 30 minutes later that I thought 'Why didn't I just stall it?'.

Hi all;

I have happily stumbled onto this members forum and am so impressed, that I felt inclined to join up. So here I am. Hello everyone :D

I currently have this same problem on my 218 SLD 'intercooled' turbo. I have called the motor-factors who have quoted me £13 for a new stop=solenoid. I want to fit the unit myself, but am not sure where the stop=solenoid is positioned under the bonnet. Also, will I require any additional washers and/or gaskets during the repair?

Thanks in advance
Andy

ps it's a '95 model as well if that's relevant? :S

I'm interested too as I'll be 'helping out' fitting/checking things most likely!

It simply bolts into/out of the fuel injection pump. I don't think there are any washers, but if there is you can re-use the one that is on there most likely.

There is an electrical connection on the end of it to remove/replace too.

Thanks E_T_V :)

Will I need to disconnect the battery as well, or can the work be done as is?

And will there be any complication whilst removing the plastic cover from the engine? It has several rubber pipes leading from/to it and with it been the intercooled model, I dunno if this makes the task more complicated??! :scared

Thanks once again

Disconnecting the battery is a sensible precaution as I can't remember if the electrical connection is live or not at rest.

I'm not 100% familiar with the XUD engine but I don't think the rover version was intercooled. So long as it all goes back where it came from I can't see any problems.

Well, it's working now. New stop-solenoid did the job nicely :)

The old one had a degraded rubber tip, which was therefore not stopping the diesel from getting to the engine, thus carrying on running after ignition was turned off.

I got given a Bosche solenoid originally from the motor-factors, which I soon realised was the wrong one! I needed a Lucas solenoid, which has a narrower thread (approx. 8mm) and longer body to that of the Bosche (approx 18mm diameter thread!)

I hope this helps anyone that is looking at this with a similar problem? :D

Thanx for the help peops :angel
