Two questions please

1. I have a 1991 (J) 216 gti TC. I think it really ought to have rear head restraints when people sit in the back. I have liberated some form the local scrappy but before I make holes in the top of the seat backs does anyone know if all 200's have the steel tubes in the rear seats that the plastic bits fit into?

2. My drivers window has taken to not wanting to go back up from time to time. It will go right down and then not close, but if I wait 60 seconds or so it will function as normal. On the same visit to the scrappy I have obtained all the driver's side window parts but I am wondering if maybe it is just the switch or the rectangular box behind the door card that would need replacing rather than the whole mechanism (which would be for the garage not me!)

The tubes are there you just need the plastic inserts to plug into them.

You'll need to do a bit a fault diagnosis to sort this out. It could be the switch, the motor or maybe even the guide. Just change one thing at a time.

I had the same problem with one of my old cars. I found that the glass was sticking in the window channels so I gave them a good spray with some silicone spray and that fixed it.

I agree. I've had similar problems with our 214. Some silicone grease in the window guides makes everything run smoothly. If they are very stiff, I expect the motor might overheat. It's less likely to be the switch if you hear the motor start and stop when you press the button. The box in the door is I think just to allow the short press to lower the driver's window by latching the motor on.

Cheers,
Hugh

Thanks all for your help. I took the inserts as well as the head restraints so I should be ok there and I'll go and get some silicone spray to start with on the window, hopefully that will sort it as I hate getting the door cards off!

Any cheap furniture polish will do just as well as a specific silicone lubricant. As a caravanner I used to use it in the awning channel on the side of my 'van. That bugger was over 3 metres long and allowed an easy glide from one end to the other dragging several kilos of dead weight.

Even better, I think the other half has furniture polish somewhere :-)

That's interestingn because the one of the plastic inserts has snapped off on my rear seats. However I can't work out how to get replacement inserts in - looks likes it's all sealed. The square plastic guide on top of the seat is not removable as far as I can tell.

You rotate them through 90 degrees - I think clockwise if you're looking from the top. Then they lift out.

If anyone could tell me how the middle seat belt retainer (also along the top edge of the back seat) comes out, I'd be very grateful. I haven't figured that one out yet.
