Everyone keeps saying that the Honda ALB system was rubbish.

I assume the reference is not to performance, more to do with reliability.

What exactly goes wrong with them?

Just curious.

The main failure I'm aware of is that the pump rotor seizes due to lack of use and sheers the spindle when asked to work.

There is no 'self-check' routine to spin the rotor unlike some other systems.

The perceived wisdom therefore is to make the system work occasionally to prevent this. Somewhere quiet and safe and preferably damp to reduce the loads and tyre wear would seem prudent.....

But there are also a lot of relays to go wrong

Interesting, so not so quite "fatally flawed" as I had come to expect. I thought it was something like failing sensors, or leaking pipework or something more fundamental.

Pity Honda didn't think to put a "stir" into the car's start-up routine, and perhaps add some easy to follow diagnostics for the electronics...

There's also the eventual necessity to track down the special bleed tool isn't there?
Strange thing. I can visualise one turning up one day on the Antiques Roadshow, where they may speculate it was a specialised weedkiller applicator.

ALB 1 & 2 were Honda's only foray into anti-lock brake technology. They quickly realised that it was going to be pretty much off-the-shelf technology that they could buy from companies such as Bosch. Fair play to them for getting to this from scratch so quickly.

The diagnostics were pretty good and on a par with those for PGMFI.

Did I mention a special bleed tool? Tempted?
