Steering play

Post by badger »

hi, ive noticed about 5-10 degrees of play in either direction on my steering wheel.

could this be a worn steering rack or ball joint?

It is power steering and seems very light, im having to make constant adjustments as the wheels seem to steer themselves without the wheel moving.

Its a 214 i '98 any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd check/replace the ball joints and track rod ends as necessary.

Get an assistant to wiggle the steering wheel while you look under the car (a pit or ramp is ideal for this). Observe carefully and find any part that is slack or loose. Replace as necessary. Also make sure that the rack is bolted tight to the car as I've heard of a couple on some cars coming loose.

If you are getting the tracking done then I'd change the track rods and anything else first, as after they are fitted you'll have to have the tracking done again too.
