Rover 200 & 400 Owners Club

With the weather and darkness I’ve not been doing much except mopping up what I believe is 7 simultaneous leaks into the boot. 2 fixed, 5 to go.

I’m the meantime I had to take out the headlining which had been lovingly stapled up - you can see if you zoom on the picture.



Anyway, I got the headboard out ok and used 3metres of AS-Trim Oxford Titanium Brushed Foam-Backed Headlining and 3 full tins of hi temp glue. It looks a great colour match. I hope it’ll last ok. The board had gone a bit soft on the underside side I assume from the original glue but it cleaned up ok and seems to stick firmly.










I’ll refit the headboard when I have fixed 5 more leaks. I’ve also had to fit a new radio after the old one I had died which does at least sound lovely with new speakers fitted.

Haha yeah I can imagine one gust and that oh-so-solid cardboard would be off!

It was quite a satisfying job really - you should go do it Tomcat! Well worth doing - I just hope I prepped the board correctly else it’ll not last as long as the original … which didn’t evidently last all that long anyway

I will have to persevere with removing the sticky remains of the old glue. I did find the small packet of alcohol wipes I had in a Hotel bedroom, worked pretty well. I'll have to have another go at finding some more.

It wasn't the prep or the adhesive which failed though - it was the (probably) polyurethane foam
backing of the cloth decomposing. Your seat cushions are probably shedding yellow dust by the
same process.

Yeah the foam and glue had reacted and the cloth long since separated from the foam. I just used my fingers to rub off the foam and glue them finished the rest off with a dry scrubbing brush. After that I used a little thinners to remove residue but it was still weirdly soft feeling. Normally I use white spirit to get glue off as it’s awesome for that but it leaves a slimy residue. Ok on metal when you can wipe it off after but I reckon bad on card.

Need to get some material for mine and get it done too. Just need to get some samples from the different suppliers. Alternatively I might just cut a piece of the headlining out and take it to all the trade stands at the next Resto show at the NEC

It’s about £12 with postage to get then from AS trim. If you private message me I’ll drop them in the post to you for nowt if you promise to return them. I think the titanium one is a lovely match for my car. Almost indistinguishable from the strip surrounding the sunroof.

Anyone know much about horns? I press the button, there’s a click mouse inside the car (relay i assume), fuse hasn’t blown. Any way of checking horns without taking the bumper off?
